“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorify glory in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord”
Jeremiah 9:23-24
In order to better worship God we must have something more than theoretical knowledge of God. The foundation of knowledge of God must begin with understanding His perfect attributes as revealed in Scripture. There are at least two dozen or so attributes of God that are revealed in the Bible. I wish to cover a few in this post.
Martin Luther in one of his letters to Erasmus said “Your thoughts of God are too human.” This is a most common error among Christians, to bring God down to our level in order to make Him more relatable or to get around characteristics we find displeasing. What’s does God say about that: “These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.” (Psalm 50:21)
Men imagine that God is moved my sentiment, rather than principle. Men regard His omnipotence as such idle fiction that both men and the Devil can thwart Him. Men restricts God’s power lest He invade man’s “free will”. But men are often misinformed. All that God has designed to do, He does. All that He has decreed, comes to pass. God is supreme.
None can thwart Him, nor hinder him. As the infinitely elevated, the most High, influenced by none, God does as He pleases. Unrivaled in majesty, unlimited in power, unaffected by anything outside Himself, He is the ruler of ALL. God is sovereign.
God is holy. He is independently, infinitely, and immutably holy. Holiness is the very excellence of the divine nature. His holiness is the antithesis of defilement and wickedness. God’s holiness is manifested in all that He does, particularly in His Law. All that God desires exudes His Law in His holiness. He loves all that is in conformity with His laws, and loathes that which is contrary. Man’s redemption can only be found in a Holy God.
He who cannot do what he will and perform all he desires cannot be God. God has the power to execute His will. Ultimate power belongs to Him and to Him alone. Nothing, in all of creation, has the infinitesimally smallest bit of power save what God has delegated. Before man can work to create he requires tools. God created everything with a thought starting with nothing, by His word alone He made all things. God is powerful.
There are many professing Christians who disregard, apologize for, and/or excuse the wrath of God. In doing so, they regard an accurate characteristic as a blemish on the divine. A clear study of the Bible will show that there are more references to the anger, fury, and wrath of God, than there is of His love. Because God is holy, He HATES all sin; and because he hates all sin, His anger burns against the sinner. The wrath of God is a perfection of the divine character that must be taken seriously, lest we be led astray.
The love of God is unique, there is nothing like it. The love of God is uninfluenced; free, spontaneous, and uncaused. The love of God is eternal, infinite, immutable, holy, gracious, as He is all of these. The immeasurable expressions of God’s love are for those in Christ alone. Meaning that although His providence falls upon the just and unjust, His love is reserved for the elect. God’s love operates in the election, redeeming, calling, and healing of the saints; Divine grace of God.
“Then shall we know, if we follow on [in the path of obedience] to know the Lord…If any many will do His will, he shall know…The people that do know their God shall be strong”
Hosea 6:3, John 7:17, Dan 11:32
